What Is a Nepali Patro?

Patro (पात्रो) means "calendar" in Nepali, and refers specifically to the Bikram Sambat calendar used officially throughout Nepal. Unlike the Gregorian calendar most of the world uses, the Nepali Patro tracks important local festivals, holidays, and auspicious dates alongside the standard day-by-day structure, and its months don't align with English calendar months.

How to Use This Nepali Patro

  • The calendar opens showing the current Nepali month, with today's date highlighted.
  • Use the arrow buttons to navigate to the previous or next Nepali month.
  • Each date shows both the Nepali date and its corresponding English (AD) date for easy cross-reference.

Why the Nepali Calendar Looks Different

Nepali months don't have fixed lengths the way Gregorian months do — Baishakh, Jestha, and other months vary between 29 and 32 days depending on the year, based on the calendar's lunar-solar calculation methods. This is why a printed or digital Nepali Patro can't be generated with a simple repeating pattern and instead relies on calculated or tabulated month lengths for each year.

Common Uses for a Nepali Patro

Tracking Festivals and Holidays

Major Nepali festivals like Dashain, Tihar, and various regional and religious observances are set by the Bikram Sambat calendar, making a Nepali Patro essential for planning around them.

Cross-Referencing with the English Calendar

Since much of daily international business, education, and travel runs on the Gregorian calendar, seeing both dates side-by-side helps avoid confusion when scheduling across systems.

Fiscal Year Planning

Nepal's official fiscal year runs on the Bikram Sambat calendar, making a Patro useful for business and government financial planning.
